What:

• Join us to explore the history of `Iolani Palace, from its modest origins as a structure of wood and stone, through its pivotal role in a painful chapter of Native Hawaiian history, to its current status as the spiritual and cultural heart of modern Hawai`i.
• We will participate in a 60-90 minute docent-led tour of the palace.

Where:

• `Iolani Palace is located at 364 South King Street, Honolulu, HI 96813
• Parking is limited on palace grounds and nearby streets. Plan ahead for your visit - reference the palace website for guidance.
• It is very likely you will have to park in surrounding areas and enjoy a brief walk to the palace. Please include this factor in your transport, travel, and on-time arrival plans.

What:

• The Loko i'a Pā'aiau Fishpond, located in McGrew Point Navy Housing (Aiea), is a Native Hawaiian National Historic Landmark that dates back 400 years. Learn about this sacred space and help restore it by clearing invasive species, planting native species, and moving rocks to fill the pond wall. This event is a collaboration with HII.
• Loko Pā'aiau is a natural ecological environment, under restoration. It is not a recreational site with sitting areas, paved sidewalks, playgrounds, etc.
• Activities may include helping to rebuild the wall enclosure of a Hawaiian fishpond, removal of invasive plants, and planting of native species. You can expect to get muddy, at little sweaty, and thoroughly educated. Sunscreen, bug spray, shoes that can get muddy, gloves, and hat are recommended.

Armed Services YMCA, in partnership with Jack Daniels, helps junior enlisted military families (E1-E5) travel home for the holidays by offering cost-covered (free) or funding toward round-trip flights for military members and their immediate family. Armed Services YMCA and Jack Daniels are committed to making this travel possible for those most in need.

Accepting applications SEPT 9 to OCT 11

• Make sure your Command Approval Form is complete.
• Travel dates can be for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years, between November 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025.
• Deadline to submit an application for consideration is October 11, 2024 at 11:59 PM (HST). Applications submitted after this deadline are ineligible and will not be accepted for consideration.

Learning to Live Aloha at 21 Degrees Estate Cacao Farm

A part of "learning to live aloha" means understanding the cultural significance of tropical plants, their use and history. This event features a guided tour of 21 Degrees Estate Cacao Farm and Hawaii agriculture, including history and an introduction to lush tropical plants and their healing properties, including many of the original canoe crops, and a mini honey and chocolate tasting.

Cost:

• $10 per person. Event is valued at $30 per person

What:

• We will be meeting on Saturday 2/22/25 (8:30am), starting our hike, concluding the hike portion by 11:30am, and an optional lunch time at the end (please bring your own lunch). The trail and its neighborhood are significant because of its history, dating back to 1884 when Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, granddaughter of Kamehameha the Great, and the last living member of the House of Kamehameha, gifted 6,000 acres of land to Samuel Mills Damon. One of the four Damon children, Douglas Damon, built his home in Kamananui Valley, on the footprint of a country home used by some of the Kamehameha dynasty. We will visit ruins of the Damon house and learn about Moanalua's revered and sacred petroglyph boulder, Pohakukaluahine, "Rock of the Old Woman." The hike is ideal for military family members ages 6 years and above. Younger children and children in carriers are okay depending on the child's ability to navigate an unpaved, and at times, uneven terrain for 1.5 miles each way.

• We will be meeting on Saturday 4/12/25 (8:00am), the Kōkua Learning Farm is an educational and agricultural destination, inspiring learners of all ages to actively support local food systems. Join us for a morning of light farm work, education, and family fun. Projects may include, but are not limited to: agroforestry work, mulching, weeding, trimming, loʻi clearing, planting, and harvesting. Please register yourself and remind anyone planning to attend to also register, so we can monitor attendance for the workday. Supervised Keiki are welcome.
